Planning your Website Print

So you need a website. The questions you need to ask yourself are:  who is your audience, and what do you want your website to achieve?

You may simply wish to create an online brochure that gives basic information about your company or service. Or you may wish to use it as a marketing tool to increase your client base while becoming more cost efficient. Or perhaps you want to be able to offer your customers additional functionality like online purchasing or discount coupons.

You may have a specific target audience in mind, or you may be looking for mass global appeal.  You can make your website freely available to the public or restrict access, some of the content could be subscription based, and you could allow sponsors to advertise on your site in the form of banners or pop-up “web-verts.”

Once you have made these decisions, you can now create a profile of your ideal visitor and what they need. With that in mind now go out into the world wide web and look at other websites to see which bits you like, which bits you hate, and which bits you think really engage with you as a visitor. This is your inspiration and can help you build  a picture of what your own website should look like. It is also a good idea to visit some forums like Yahoo Answers and see what kind of questions  your 'typical' clients are asking, and think about how you can answer them with your website.
