A 'domain name' or 'URL' is more commonly know as a web address eg www.aletal.co.uk. I.e the text that appears in between the 'www' and the '.com' or '.co.uk'. It is most common to use the name of your company, or a catchy shortened version. It can be any length betwen 3 and 67 characters that are not case sensitive.
Once you have thought of some possible website addresses, you need to check that no-one else is already using it. You can do this by going to any of the main sites that register URLs eg UK2.net or you can use a site that helps suggest alternative names like DomainsBot.
It is a good idea to think about registering similar domain names and linking them all to one website so that you can't be confused by a competitor. For instance www.yourcompanyname.com and www.yourcompanyname.co.uk are two different domain names.
In the UK all '.co.uk' domains are registered with a company called Nominet who keeps a database of what is available, and similar companies around the world keep the details of extensions like .com and .eu. This requires an ongoing registration fee which varies depending on the name but will usually be between £5 and £30 per year.
We will help you to register or transfer your existing domain name as part of our service, and will happily try to help with inspiration to find that original name.
